I Smell Christmas – A Poem by Sylvia Syms

Cloves and Oranges

Cloves and Oranges

Pine scented candles line the mantles.

The smells of cinnamon and allspice wafting from the apple and sweet potato pies and the simmering cider pot.

Oranges, stuffed with cloves by little hands, dangle from candy cane ribbons above the fireplace.

Cloves will dot the ham that is served today.

Mugs of chocolate nog made perfect by the the finishing touch of nutmeg.

Ginger nutmeg tea calms stomachs before they are full.

A golden table runner lined with potted springs of rosemary and mint, leading up to the gingerbread house centerpiece.

Sage rubbed turkey with a bouquet garni of thyme, bay leaves, and sage, tied with a string and wrapped with cheesecloth sequestered in the cavity of the bird, will go well with apricot wild rice dressing that will only get tastier days after the holiday.

A chamomile and lavender soak for the lovely lady hosting the feast.

Gingerbread wishes in this season of loving kindness!
