The United States Declaration of Independence
was drafted by Thomas Jefferson, edited, and then adopted by the
Committee of the Whole of the Second Continental Congress
on July 4, 1776.
The second section of text in the Declaration contains the phrase:
“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.–“
